It was the sight of words lined up on...One of the founding fathers of minimal art, Carl Andre was brought to poetry by his father at an early age. It was the sight of words lined up on the page that influenced his poetry, where words are laid on paper just as bricks are laid on the floor; the placement of the typography translates sculpture to paper. The font, spaces and repetition create rhythm.
This three page poem from 1965 gave its title to a later sculpture from 1976 : Lament for the Children, comprised of 100 concrete blocks installed in the playground of the school that is now MOMA PS1.Exhibitions
